A beautiful magazine illustration rendered in Gruger's preferred medium Wolff carbon pencil.

An illustration of Taormina, Sicily for the article "Golden Cities of Sicily"
by Henry James Forman in Harper's Magazine, August 1923.

Gruger joined Forman on a research trip to Sicily prior to creating the illustrations for this Harper's series and subsequent book. A romantic image of three young tourists taking in an expanse of Greek ruins, Sicilian rooftops and distant mountains. This large original is also an excellent example of Gruger's technique perfectly suited for close study of every stroke.

Fortunino Matania. NED KELLY'S SISTER AT THE FIRE OF GLENROWAN INN. [SN25027] $2200

1940. 8 in x 9.5 in image in mat and framed to 18 in x 19.5 in. Fine.

The Ned Kelly outlaw gang terrorized Australia during the 1870s. Kelly and his gang were cornered by authorities in 1880. The caption for this dramatic illustration reads, "'I would rather see them burned alive than see them surrender,' the horsewoman said." Matania wrote & illustrated the Ned Kelly story for the series 'Old Tales Retold' in Britannia & Eve Magazine [London: March 1945]. The illustration was later published in the book The Eagle Book of Amazing Stories [London: 1973]. Double matted and framed.
