There is overlap with other books (20 pieces also appear in the current Sketchbook IX), but a number of other pieces created in the last 12 months appear here for the first time. Yoshitaka Amano. YOSHITAKA AMANO - IMAGINE. [SN29037] $100 Tokyo: Riido-Sha, 1987. 1st. 4to (11-13"), 112pp, 80 pages of color illustrations + 32 pages in b&w, softcover wraps. NF/NF. One of the first art books to collect the works of Yoshitaka Amano. Not surprisingly, this book centered a lot on his work at Tatsunoko, as he had only recently left the studio to pursue his freelance career. The book included a number of original illustrations of Gatchaman characters drawn in various styles, and a section at the end of the book discussed the characters of Jun and Berg Katse, which he helped design for the original Gatchaman series." Includes quite a wide range of early material in the funny animals and kids genre not always associated with Amano and rarely reproduced. Also includes character designs for the 1985 Vampire Hunter D movie. Text in Japanese.

This copy is also inscribed by the artist. Cartoons and caricatures of Amid's Spumco coworkers (created while working on the latest incarnation of Ren & Stimpy for TNN). Amid's cartooning style is best described as part of the "ugly" school. Amid is also co-blogger of Cartoon Brew, the publisher of Animation Blast, and author of several animation books.

A collection of 44 cartoons about comic strip and book creators, mostly American and European, and really only for the initiated. The humor is very dry and droll: "Winsor McCay has a second helping of rarebit." "Bill Watterson refusing offers." I saw the originals on display at the Museum of Comic Art in Angouleme earlier this year and fell in love with them.
Ben Balistreri. SEAWEED, BOOK 1: THE CURE FOR MILDEW. [SN24137X] $30 np: privately printed, 2008. 1st. Folio (15 ½" x 12 ½"), 64pp, color and b&w illustrations, cloth spine, hardcover pictorial boards. VF. A beautifully illustrated graphic novel. Plus 24 pages of development, rough sketches, and notes on the making of the book. Ben is currently a storyboard artist at Dreamworks. Some of his past credits include being the character design supervisor for the 5th and 6th seasons of "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends", a storyboard artist and character designer at Nickelodeon on Danny Phantom, and a character designer at Disney TV. He's been nominated for five Annie Awards.

He wrote and illustrated the character design instruction book "Creating Characters with Personality." His sketchbook.

[SN26568X] $50 Torino: Pavesio, 2005. 1st. 4to (11-13"), 108pp, b&w, hardcover pictorial boards. VF. Literally, "Sky Doll Pencils." We carried the French limited edition until it sold out and we are pleased to have located some copies of the nearly identical Italian limited edition. It reproduces the third and final Sky Dolls volume (with an alternate ending) in its pencil form: the left-hand pages reproduce the artist's loose pencil sketches and the right-hand pages reproduce the finished pencil pages. The final ten pages of this version of Sky Doll 3 concludes the story arc rather than the final version’s "to be continued." A more satisfying ending, if I say so myself. Text in Italian.

Pancratia is an online comic by Ryan and this is the art of book including Episodes 1 and 2 and behind-the-scenes development art: character and vehicle designs, and other artwork. Ryan is a comic book artist and concept artist for films and gaming.

Wonderful loose lively sketches of Dames, Max Hamm, future Supporting Characters, and Storybook Land Cityscapes.

These paintings focus on Los Angeles scenes at dusk and dawn: an underground parking lot, a Japanese restaurant, a used car lot, Ballona Creek, MacArthur Park, etc. The catalogue includes a list of solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and a bibliography.
