np: privately printed, 2010. 1st. 4to (11-13"), 100 pages, color illustrations, hardcover pictorial boards. VF.

"Titmouse Vol. 1 is not a cartoon. It is also not a comic book, not a magazine, and it’s not a book - it’s a MOOK, a magazine-book. Like Sushi, MOOK is an addictive Japanese concept that will take the world by storm. It also goes great with saké, with a significantly lower risk of succumbing to the paralyzing effects of mercury poisoning.

"It’s like the cartoons we make, but in the form of a hardcover book printed on fancy paper! Dave Cooper, Andy Suriano, Jon Schnepp, and Travis Millard are just a few of the 17 artists featured in this first issue. Volume 1 is packed with comics, an interview with Dave Cooper and features Flatulene [a comic book story] by Dave Johnson.

"We have assembled a team of weirdo artist-types to create this 100 page hardcover anthology and printed it in full color on fancy paper featuring comic strips, paintings, and interviews from some of the art world’s most interesting individuals. It’s 1/3 Heavy Metal, 1/3 Mad Magazine, 1/3 Juxtapoz, and 1/3 Ralph Bakshi film-on-paper, fancy paper.

"You might ask yourself or a friend, why cartoon company want make book? Chief editor and studio president, Chris Prynoski said, “I wanted to make this book, because I wanted to read a book like this, and that’s why I wanted to make it.” Art Director, Antonio Canobbio, is French--so you know the stuff in Titmouse vol. 1 is real art!

"Titmouse vol. 1 features artists of comic book and animation fame including: Tommy Blacha, Freddy Christy, Dave Cooper, Steven Daily, Jacob Escobedo, Dave Fremont, Kaori Hamura, Paul Harmon, Dave Johnson, Kelsey Mann, Richard Mather, Travis Millard, Israel Sanchez, Jon Schnepp, Andy Suriano, and Otto Tang.

"1942-1945. Humanity is living its darkest moments of the 20th century. While the earth shakes under the bombs, the sky is the stage of intense combat. Among those birds of prey, heading towards battle at 600 km/hour, how many realize that this will be their final flight?"

Andre Juillard. ENTRACTE. [SN27889X] $100

Paris: Galerie Daniel Maghen , 2006. 2nd. 4to (11-13"), 432pp, color illustrations, cloth spine, hardcover pictorial boards.

"An autobiography in images." This massive, beautifully produced art book is devoted to the life and works of French bande dessinée artist Andre Juillard (born 1948). Juillard is part of the clear-line school. While I have found some of his artwork in bande dessinée stiff, this book is filled with beautiful, loose drawings and watercolors (with many pages devoted to female figures, draped and undraped) and excellent examples of the clear line style. Lovely work throughout, beautifully and faithfully reproduced on heavy watercolor paper. Text in French.

"Throughout these 432 pages which combine drawings and handwritten text, André Juillard unpacks his portfolios of drawings, memories, dreams, of life, declaring on the first pages that "for him, drawing is as necessary as breathing." But what it confirms to us especially, it is the extraordinary power of his pencil which gives life and heart to his heroes. This interval in the life of the author is an occasion to review his career. An astonishing and uncommon career where characters, cowboys, knights, corsairs, Indians and women - especially of the women! - meet within these pages, accompanied by the account of their creator. Since it is a true tour through the heart of the artist, André Juillard testifies to his great admiration for his "mentors", Mézières and Jijé. But he also pays homage to his scenario writers, including Jacques Martin, father of Arno, Pierre Christin, and of course its accomplice Patrick Cothias, scenario writer of two major series in the career of Andre Juillard: 'Les 7 Vies de l'Épervier' and 'Plume aux Vents'."
