Claire Wendling. DESK. [SN21787] $30

Torrance: Stuart Ng Books, 2006. 1st. Sq 8vo, 64pp, monochrome, wraps. VF. A pure sketchbook: 64 pages of pencil drawings of imaginary monsters and real animals. Horned beasts, lions, horses, wolves, foxes, etc.

These drawings were created between 1996 and 1998. Most were drawn in Los Angeles during her off-hours from the WB studio. They have never been published in any other book. They do not appear in Iguana Bay 2.0 or Drawers 2.0. Redrawn versions of a few drawings appear in Drawers 2.0 pages 108-111.

In addition to the same production values and high quality reproduction of the French edition are several exclusives to this English-language edition: three previously unpublished drawings, an insightful biography featuring new quotes from the artist, a new Foreword by Mike Mignola, and tributes from other artists.

Claire Wendling. DRAWERS 2.0. [SN24044X] $60

Bordeaux: le Cycliste, 2005. Revised 2nd. 4to (11-13”), 144pp, over 650 color illustrations, pictorial boards. VF without dust-jacket as issued. This is a revised and expanded edition of Drawers originally published in January 2001. With over 400 new images, this is an essential volume whether or not you have the original edition. This is the only career overview of this phenomenal artist covering her work in comic books, animation, film, and commercial illustration. Also well represented are her personal drawings not meant for publication. Most of the personal drawings that appeared in the original edition have been replaced with new versions by Claire (a la Iguana Bay 2.0). Very little, if any, overlap with Desk or Iguana Bay.

Many of the images in this edition do not appear in the revised edition. Most importantly, most of the pencil drawings in this edition were redrawn for the revised edition.

Claire Wendling. Louys, Pierre. APHRODITE, TOME 3. [SN23108X] $36

Paris: Humanoides , 1999. 4to (11-13”), 64pp, color, pictorial boards. VF. Text in French. From the publisher: "This classical tale of sensuous love was one of the best-selling novels of its time. Published in 1896, the French erotic masterpiece Aphrodite made Pierre Louÿs famous and was by far his greatest success, surpassing that of his other well-known works such as The Songs of Bilitis. Conceived as a novel of the antiquity focusing on women and on light, Aphrodite seems to lend itself naturally to illustration. The story takes place in Alexandria in the first century B. C. where Demetrios, a renowned artist, falls in love with a courtesan, Chrysis. She asks him to prove his love to her by committing three crimes, and Demetrios agrees."

In 1996, Claire put together a collection of drawings and sketches which was published as a limited edition titled Iguana Bay. 2003. "seven years later. For every character study, sketch and drawing from the first edition, Claire has chosen to present a new, very personal version, revised and corrected in pencil, ink or pastel." Both the 1996 and the 2003 versions of each image are presented on opposing pages to fully appreciate the evolution of this master draftsperson.
