This is a beautiful copy of the only monograph on caricaturist William Auerbach-Levy (1889-1964). Technically, it is a second edition: the 1957 reprinting of Is That Me? A Book About Caricature.
An incredible, insightful and profusely illustrated book. The look and style of WAL's caricatures was wholly unique and deserves a look.
From the dust jacket:
Like every work of art, a caricature reveals not only the subject but the artist as well. This book is therefore more than a manual of technique and methods, though in this respect it is certainly the most thorough and searching analysis of the art yet written. It is, besides, a wise and witty commentary on the life of our times and an informal autobiographical sketch.
William Auerbach-Levy is perhaps the best-known and most skillful caricaturist in America today. His work has appeared in the most notable magazines and newspapers in the country, and his facile pen has limned the great and near-great in every field of endeavor. To his studio have come industrialists, playwrights, actors, poets, musicians, athletes, public officials--celebrities of all kinds--whose caricatures are not only reproduced in this book but whose reactions to seeing themselves impaled by the artist's pen are set down in amusing and revealing anecdotes.
This is a 1957 reprinting of the 1947 original.
